About Yan P. So

The Yan P. So Award in Family Medicine has been created at UBC in memory of its namesake. Dedicated to the art of family medicine for fifty-six years, Dr. Yan P. So was an alumnus of the UBC Faculty of Medicine who was recognized by Fraser Health Authority as a “remarkable example of caregiving.” He strived to address the root causes of patients’ illnesses and to provide care where needed—his office, community hospitals, patients’ homes, long-term care residences—often into the evenings and on weekends.

Treating patients regardless of circumstance, disease, time involved or remuneration, Dr. So said his greatest reward was to treat generations of families. They remember him as an outstanding physician and honourable man who knew and valued them: “You always had time to listen. We never felt rushed. You took as much time as was needed and supported us through every decision.” He took to heart this aphorism learned at medical school: give patients your full attention in the examining room, as if they are the most important persons in the room. And never look at your watch.

  • Dr. So was our family physician and the most dedicated and professional person I could ever hope for in a doctor. He was always there for our family over the years. He always stayed current with new treatments and methodologies; attending seminars to keep his skills up to date. Anyone wanting to be family physician should look at his history for something to strive to achieve. Dr. So was always a family man and loved his children and wife very much. He enjoyed taking family trips to China and he liked his hockey. Upon his retirement he was instrumental in ensuring that I was well looked after and with the right team of doctors. As a result of his efforts, I have been blessed to have the finest care available. He was missed from his first day of retirement and is missed now. He had a passion for medicine that cannot be put into words. Rest well my friend and I salute you and your values.

  • Yan was an esteemed colleague who was held in the highest regard by all his patients of the past 50 years. I had the privilege of working with him and was most impressed by his thoroughness and analytical, diagnostic and treatment skills. Never to have their visit cut short, his patients all appreciated this and readily waited patiently in his waiting room for their turn. I understood that he was one of the earlier if not the earliest graduate of UBC Medical School, at a time when Chinese were somewhat restricted entry to UBC, much less to the medical faculty. His varied interests in Canadian sports and cultural events attest to his complete integration into the Canadian diaspora. His dedication to his family, Jean, his wife, his children and grandchildren was complete and he was a model family man. It is with much sadness that I learned about and followed his final illness and eventual passing. Our circle of friends and colleagues has suffered a huge loss.

  • Dr. So was our family doctor for over 25 years - my younger daughter was delivered by him. He was a very responsible and patient doctor, and we were very happy that we could communicate with him by Cantonese. Dr. So loved his family very much that many times, he liked to tell us about his children when we saw him at his clinic. He enjoyed his professional work - such time when we had met him at a restaurant, he was reading a medical magazine. He kept his professional knowledge very up to date. We feel honoured to have had the opportunity to know Dr. So, and to have him as our family doctor. Dr. So, you are admirable for your personality, you are blessed for you did a wonderful job in your life.
