About Laura Taylor

Laura left this world far too soon, just days before her 34th birthday. Left to cherish her memory are her loving family members—parents Tom and Sue, siblings Heather (Steve) and Graham (Itsuki), treasured nieces Ella and Riona, and awesome nephew Fuzuki. Also surviving Laura are many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Laura passionately pursued many interests including top level sports such as soccer, ringette and most recently CIS Hockey as a member of the UBC Women’s T-Birds silver medalist hockey team. In her younger years, Laura coached young players in various sports and volunteered to assist challenged young people in most of the communities where she resided. Laura loved being outdoors; hiking, skiing, kayaking or cycling. She had an appetite for learning about anything and everything and was keen to share this knowledge. Her caring attitude naturally led her to UBC medical school where she thrived on the new learning experiences and developed great skills.

Laura was drawn to follow in the medical footsteps of her grandfather, father and older sister. The challenges of medical school were a perfect match for her brilliant mind and her caring heart. For more than half her life, Laura valiantly tried to overcome her long battle with the effects of depression, within the disease of bipolar disorder, but sadly the struggle finally took its toll.

The family truly appreciates the compassionate care provided by numerous physicians over the years in Saskatoon, Prince George, Kelowna and Vancouver.

  • I was a visitor student from Germany spending two semesters at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon in 2001/02. As a big hockey fan I went to a lot of games of the U of S Huskies. Soon I became familiar with the names of the players, be it women or men. I recognised Laura as one of the goalies. We both lived on campus but unfortunately never talked to each other. Every now and then I find myself googling some of the former players, just to see where life has taken them. It was with deep sadness that I learnt of Laura's passing last night. What a tough break. From all I've read about her, having Laura as a friend must have been a true privilege. If there's one thing we should learn for the future it is to be upfront about all things mental illness, make it OK to talk about it and show our support to all those suffering from depression or bipolar. My thoughts are with Laura's family, loved ones and friends.

  • It was less than a year ago when Laura spent a month in our clinic providing medical care to many of our clinic patients. Her diligence, professionalism and genuine care for her patients was remarkable. We continue to be reminded of Laura every time we see her electronic signature in the charts of patients she cared for. Our profession has lost one heck of an individual. My thoughts continue to be with Laura's family, hockey team mates and med school colleagues.
