About Stuart Maddin

Dr. Stuart Maddin was a Clinical Professor Emeritus and UBC graduate, and was affiliated with the Department of Dermatology for more than 50 years. Over the course of his 65-year career as an international practitioner, educator, researcher, and public advocate, he helped to lead the evolution of dermatology. He touched the lives of many people, and his contributions to the field, both nationally and internationally, are legendary.

The son of a pharmacist, Dr. Maddin was born and raised in Cupar, Saskatchewan. He graduated from UBC in 1942 and completed his medical training at Dalhousie University in 1947. This was followed by dermatology residency training in Vancouver and the New York University. Over the next 60 years, Dr. Maddin was affiliated with UBC’s medical school and succeeded in rising through the academic ranks to become a full Clinical Professor in 1982.

To say that Dr. Maddin was a leader in his field would be an understatement. He was involved in all the major initiatives in Canadian dermatology over the past 60 years and held leadership positions in most major dermatology organizations, including the Canadian Dermatology Foundation, the Canadian Dermatology Association, the American Dermatological Association, the International Committee of Dermatology, and the International League of Dermatologic Societies. He authored more than 60 articles and eight textbooks in the field of dermatology and was the founder and editor-in-chief of Skin Therapy Letter, a publication that is indexed by the National Library of Medicine. In short, he was an extraordinary man whose lifetime’s work was devoted to the study, care, consideration, and celebration of skin.

Dr. Maddin left an indelible impression on everyone he met. He had a European flair for fashion, a gift for storytelling, and a sharp and curious mind. In the dermatology community he was a trailblazer; at home he was a loyal friend, guiding father and devoted husband. Everyone who knew him has personal stories of how he helped and inspired them. Always personable, he was well known for remembering the names and stories of everyone he met. He was a generous soul and a remarkable intellect, with seemingly endless patience and energy. Dr. Maddin will be remembered with fondness and respect by friends, colleagues and students alike.

  • Stuart Maddin interviewed me when I was applying for a dermatology residency at UBC 27 years ago. He gave me great advice that day, and I continued to seek his experience ever since then. A great mentor, teacher, and colleague with a kind and generous soul. We will miss having you around, Stuart. Your dreams and skills will live on through your many students.

  • Stuart Maddin has been a mentor to me for over 32 years. He has given advice to me since I started my dermatology residency, during my private and university practice in Vancouver, and finally my transitioning to New York City. He was an educator, clinician, author, and overall a generous human being who gave his time to help his colleagues with priceless advice involving difficult patients and milestone career decisions. I am grateful to have known such a kind and gracious man.

  • Stuart Maddin taught me many pearls in dermatologic therapy during my residency in the late 1970s. He remained at the leading edge right into his 90s. Stu was also a pioneer in dermatologic surgery. As residents, he taught us surgical techniques and he actively supported those of us interested in skin surgery by helping us obtain fellowship training in Mohs Micrographic Surgery and cutaneous oncology. His ever cheerful enthusiasm and presence will be sorely missed!

  • Dr. Maddin has always been an inspiration to me. He had an incredibly accomplished career, and in so many realms, from clinical brilliance, to bringing some important medicines to fruition, to running unique and wonderful conferences, along with online and other educational initiatives. He was a singular man that will be greatly missed by the global dermatology community.

  • As a resident at UBC I remember Dr. Maddin always being well dressed. One meeting shortly after I graduated he came up to me at one of the meetings and admired a jacket I was wearing. "That looks good on you - you should wear that style." I remember his kind words and the fact that he was a leader and a mentor to so many of us.

  • The world is a lesser place without Dr. Madden. The phrase "gentleman and a scholar" often is thrown about too casually, but it was absolutely true in the case of Stuart. He was an inspiration to me, and I will miss seeing him at various dermatology events around the world. (Glenn Williams, the Procter & Gamble Company.)

  • As a UBC derm resident and later as a practitioner - I would often seek Stu's counsel on issues personal and professional. During weekend call when I'd come in to review slides before rounds, I'd often see him already there on those early weekend mornings working in his office. His work ethic was legendary and he seemed tireless. His insight was always practical, useful and effective. On many occasions this past week at WCD 2015, I wanted one more chance to seek that wisdom and clarity. Thank you Stuart for the opportunities, your generosity and your wisdom - you will always be an inspiration to me. You deserve to rest and rest well.
